Snack Now, Lift Later: The Best Pre-Gym Bites in London!

Alright, let’s be real, half the reason most of us even go to the gym is so we can eat more food, guilt-free, at least that's what I do. The other half? Well, because London’s food scene is too good and you gotta balance it somehow. But what you eat before a workout can actually make or break your session. No one wants to feel like a beached whale halfway through Pilates (Trust me because I've been there and done that It's not so fun). S0, whether you’re a proper gym rat or just getting started with this whole ‘fitness life’, here are a few solid places around London to grab a quick bite before you train.

1. Joe & The Juice — Tunacado and a Power Shake

This place is basically the unofficial hangout spot for anyone in gym gear, at least that is what it always appears to be. Their Tunacado sandwich is famous for a reason; tuna, avocado, a little spice… it’s light but it does hit the spot. Pair it with a Power Shake (strawberry, banana, vanilla milk) and you’ll be powered up without feeling too stuffed. Best part, like others on this list is that there’s literally one of these on every corner in central London, you can’t miss it even if you tried.

2. Leon — Protein-Packed Breakfast Muffin

If you’re one of those rare humans who hits the gym early (mad respect, btw), Leon’s got you covered. Their Smashed Avocado & Halloumi Muffin is the right kinda mix — healthy fats, a bit of protein, and tastes way better than it should for something ‘good for you’. Grab a Ginger Shot too if you need that kick to wake up properly, I personally hate the taste but it really does the job.

3. Pret A Manger — Egg & Spinach Protein Pot

Not feeling super hungry? Pret’s Protein Pot is a classic. Boiled eggs and spinach. Simple. No risk of stomach flips halfway through your squats. But if you need a little extra, you can always chuck in a banana or one of those Nut Butter Protein Balls. Plus, like Leon, it’s Pret, therefore you’ll trip over one every 10 steps around in London anyway.

4. Farmer J — Field Trays with a Protein Punch

If you’re training later in the day and need an actual proper meal, Farmer J is pretty banging. Their Spicy Chicken Field Tray with brown rice, sweet potato, and greens is the one. Not too heavy but fills you up just right. But if that's not your fancy for the day, then you can always just make your own Field Tray on the spot to whatever fits your mood at that moment. To top it off, the vibes in there are chill, and you won’t get the side eye for ordering extra chicken.

5. Planet Organic — Smoothie Bar Magic

If you’re feeling a bit ‘I’m healthy now’ and want something clean but tasty, head to Planet Organic. Their Protein Power Smoothie with almond milk, banana, peanut butter and vegan protein powder is a solid choice. Tastes like it should be bad for you, but it’s not.

Overall, pre-workout food doesn’t have to be boring old protein shakes or sad, dry rice cakes. London’s absolutely packed with spots that’ll fuel you up without making you feel like you’ve overdone it. However, there is always the option of just going 'raw', but I would absolutely not recommend that unless you're insane. [If you’ve got a go-to spot or a weird pre-gym ritual snack (looking at you, people who eat rice cakes with peanut butter and pickles), drop it in the comments. Always keen to try something new.]
